A Little About Mary Janë

Everyone in my family seemed to be born with exquisite taste. My mother's closet was lined with heels embellished in gold and amber, which I took every opportunity to parade around in. Although they swallowed my feet whole, at five years old I could already picture the woman I was destined to become. 

My grandmother's jewelry box was another great fascination. I loved the jewels, of course, but even more so the thought of the women who had worn them before me. Where had they gone? Who had given them such lovely things? I find it terribly romantic that something once so adored by one woman might become just as precious to another.

I suppose that's where Mary Janë began, somewhere between a little girl's imagination and a lifelong affection for beautiful things. A collection of handmade and vintage jewelry, art, and objects of affection. Things with a past, things made with love, and things I simply couldn't leave behind.

And as for the Mary Janë girl? She's the woman you pass on the street and wonder how on earth she put it all together. She's the little girl in her mother's shoes, the woman who wears the same bracelet every day and wouldn't dream of taking it off. She's still discovering herself, but she knows what she loves and doesn't feel the slightest bit guilty about it.

After all, the right piece of jewelry doesn't make you someone else. It makes you feel a little more like yourself.
